GastI’ve been thinking about opening a small café or maybe a bakery here in Hope. I’ve done a bit of catering before, but running an actual storefront is a whole different thing. I’m not sure what kind of local permits I’d need or what to expect when dealing with the town office. For those who’ve started a business here, how was the process? Any surprises or advice you’d give someone just getting started?

GastWhen I opened my small repair shop a few years ago, I found the process pretty manageable but definitely slower than I expected. The town staff were helpful, but paperwork took some patience. My advice: double-check zoning rules before signing a lease — that saved me a headache later. There are a lot of supportive local businesses in Hope, BC that you can network with, and they often share tips about suppliers, marketing, and community events. That local connection really helps when you’re new.

GastI’ve noticed that small-town businesses here often grow through word of mouth rather than advertising. People like to buy local and tend to support owners they know personally. It’s probably a good idea to get involved in community events early on — seems like a great way to build trust and visibility at the same time.
